Wayne Rooney has moved into punditry since leaving his job as Plymouth Argyle boss last year and was asked to name his top five player in the Premier League this season – revealing Mohamed Salah as his top pick
Wayne Rooney has named his top five players in the Premier League this season, placing Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah at No 1. The Manchester United legend has taken to punditry after being sacked as Plymouth Argyle boss last year and has become a popular figure on TNT Sports and Amazon Prime.
And after gracing our screens for the latter part of the season, Rooney has now been asked to pick his top five players of the Premier League campaign.
Despite his former side United suffering a miserable campaign, he found space for captain Bruno Fernandes in the top five after the Portuguese playmaker carried the Red Devils with eight goals and nine assists in the league.
“In fifth place, I think I’ll probably go with Bruno Fernandes, he told Amazon. “Obviously Manchester United haven’t had a great season but he’s been the one consistent player who keeps producing so I’ll go with Bruno for number five.”
He then named Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White at number four after playing an integral role under Nuno Espirito Santo that has put the Tricky Trees in contention for a Champions League spot, netting five goals and providing seven assists along the way.

And despite his recent struggles for Chelsea, he went with Cole Palmer at number three, hailing his “influential” displays at Stamford Bridge that have seen him have 22 goal involvements overall.
“In fourth place, I’d probably go with Morgan Gibbs-White,” he added. “I think he’s had a fantastic season for Nottingham Forest, creating and scoring goals and being the main player there in my opinion.
“In third place, I’d go with Cole Palmer. I know of late he hasn’t scored the goals he did at the start of the season, but I still think he’s been really influential for Chelsea this season.”
He was left picking between Alexander Isak and Salah for No 1 and ended up backing the Liverpool star after an incredible campaign that has seen him score 27 times to inspire the team’s title charge.
He lauded the performances of Isak for Newcastle after scoring 21 times, second behind Salah, but said Salah was the outstanding player this season.
“In second place, I’d go with Isak from Newcastle. I think his all-round play, his goals, obviously scoring the goal in the final as well. Isak would be my number two pick and my number one pick would be Mo Salah.
“I think over the last few years his performances has been excellent and this season again it looks like he’s going to spearhead Liverpool to the title.”
