Manchester United have endured one of their worst seasons in the clubs storied history.
A 16th-place finish in the Premier League, early exits from both domestic cup competitions, and defeat in the Europa League final have left the Red Devils without European competition next season and with a mountain to climb to get the club back there.
Since replacing Erik Ten Hag last November, Ruben Amorim has amassed just 24 points from 26 games, averaging only 0.92 points per game—a deeply concerning return.
Despite the turbulent campaign, Amorim reportedly informed his squad during a meeting at the training ground today that he will still be staying put next season.
Whilst Amorim is committed to turning the clubs fortunes around, it’s clear not every player will be joining him on that journey into the 25/26 season. One high-profile exit appears to already be on the cards, which is Alejandro Garnacho.
The Argentinian winger was visibly frustrated at being left out of the starting XI for the Europa League final against Tottenham, and hinted at uncertainty over his future during a post-match interview with ESPN.
“I’ll try to enjoy the summer,” the 20 year old stated, “and then we’ll see what happens.”
When asked what’s next, Garnacho added: “I’ll try to enjoy the summer, and then we’ll see what happens.”
It’s clear Amorim wants full commitment from his players and those looking elsewhere, like Garnacho, will be shown the door.
With a major rebuild needed and no European football on offer, Manchester United face a challenging summer as they attempt to reshape the squad to fit Amorim’s vision.
But sometimes big budgets aren’t always needed to change a team’s fortunes around and the Red Devils may have to take inspiration from fellow Premier League sides Brighton and Brentford on how to secure quality players for a fraction of the price.
