Levi Williams, a 25-year-old apprentice who has ridden 12 winners, was remanded in custody ahead of an appearance before magistrates in Ipswich
A jockey has been charged with murder after a 71-year-old man who was seriously injured in a fight in Newmarket died. Levi Williams, who is a 25-year-old apprentice rider, was arrested on March 8 after police were called to an incident in the town’s High Street.
Suffolk police said the altercation involved four people as a result of which two men sustained injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment. One of the injured parties, aged 45, was discharged later in the evening on 8 March. The other casualty, aged 71, remained in Addenbrooke’s Hospital in a critical condition. He died on Tuesday, ten days after the incident.
A police statement said: “A 25-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of assault causing grievous bodily harm and subsequently bailed, was rearrested yesterday afternoon and taken to Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre for questioning.
`’Levi Williams, of Holland Park, Newmarket, has subsequently been charged with murder. He was remanded in custody and is due to appear before Ipswich Magistrates’ Court today, Wednesday 19 March.
“A 23-year-old man who was also arrested on suspicion of assault causing grievous bodily harm; and a 45-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of affray; both remain on police bail until 5 June and 9 June respectively.”
At the Ipswich hearing Williams was further remanded in custody to appear at a preliminary hearing at Cambridge Crown Court on Thursday.
The jockey, who has ridden 12 winners from 165 rides, has not been active since May 2023. He was banned for 18 months in August 2023 after testing positive for cocaine at Windsor on May 1.
He had previously served a six month suspension in 2021 when he had tested positive for cocaine and cannabis.
