Gold Coast completed a successful couple of weeks up in Darwin (NT) by coming out on top to defeat fellow flag contenders Hawthorn in a shootout-style encounter. Playing in his home state, with his family and friends in attendance, including his AFL Hall of Famer Uncle Michael, forward Ben Long (pictured below) booted a career-high four majors.
John Noble became just the 13th player in AFL history to record over 1000m gained and collect 36 disposals and three clearances in a quality showing.
However, the night belonged to All-Australian Touk Miller (pictured above), who has remained very loyal to the Suns during his ten-year career, as he made his 200th appearance.
Taken at pick 29 in the 2014 AFL Draft, the 29-year-old became only the second player in club history to complete the feat, following in the footsteps of David Swallow.
Narrm upset Brisbane on their home deck
Narrm (Melbourne) produced a surprise with a stirring comeback in the final quarter to run over the top of reigning Premiers Brisbane on their home deck.
In a run of great form, Captain Max Gawn was once again pivotal for the Dees, whilst Clayton Oliver had the unenviable task of tagging Brownlow medallist Lachie Neale.
As part of Sir Doug Nicholls Round, the club donned an Indigenous guernsey designed by artist and comedian Kevin Kropinyeri, Kysaiah Pickett’s dad.
On an otherwise disappointing afternoon, one bright note for the Lions was the return of Keidean Coleman, after 14 months out, following a knee reconstruction.
Magpies go top of the ladder
Collingwood has taken over as the new ladder leaders. They have kept up their remarkable run against Kuwarna (Adelaide) by making it ten straight successes.
Played before 67,697 at the MCG, a record home and away crowd involving the visitors, they finally broke the contest open in the final term.
Billy Frampton really stood up for the Magpies, in a makeshift defence due to injuries, by keeping dangerous Crows forward Riley Thilthorpe goalless.
In an emotional interview, coach Craig McCrae revealed that the decision was made to shield the squad from the news that Adam Selwood, older brother of assistant manager Scott, had tragically passed away that morning in Perth, aged just 41.
Jezza kicks a bag in Cats rout
Jeremy Cameron (pictured below) booted a season-high seven majors as Geelong made an emphatic statement by belting a below-par Yartapuulti (Port Adelaide) at the Oval.
The first half was a competitive affair, but after the main interval, the Cats went up another gear, and the Power couldn’t match it and were blown away.
Their score of just a meagre 39 points was their third lowest in ten years, and this latest thrashing means that coach Ken Hinkley, in his last season of eleven years at the club, has now suffered three of his heaviest ten defeats this campaign.
Both sides were left counting the cost of injuries with five players ruled out before the break – four with hamstring injuries – and facing a timeout on the sidelines.
Bailey Dale smashes club records
A fast-starting Western Bulldogs went on to record their third-biggest victory ever over a dreadful Essendon by putting them to the sword in a 91-point mauling.
Half-back Bailey Dale (pictured below) had the night of his life for the Doggies as he smashed three club records for disposals (49), uncontested possessions (37) and kicks (37).
It completes a good week for the club, having agreed a five-year contract extension, through 2030, with midfielder Ed Richards, who has been in excellent form.
This comes on the back of defender Rory Lobb, known for his colourful hairstyles, also signing on at the Kennel for another two years until the end of 2027.
Jackson going nowhere
Walyalup’s (Fremantle) Jekyll and Hyde form continued as they travelled interstate and secured their first ever victory over Greater Western Sydney at Engie Stadium.
The Dockers have earned a reputation for being flat track bullies, having struggled on the road, but they were up for this one and ran out deserved winners.
Luke Jackson (pictured above) wasn’t fazed by a week of continued speculation about his future at the WA outfit, by coming out on top in the ruck battle against Kieren Briggs.
Coach Justin Longmuir brushed off the subject in his presser when asked, saying, “Never has he said anything but he wants to be a Fremantle player, and these headlines keep popping up and people from other clubs keep fuelling them.”
Marn Grook Match
Sydney ensured that Carlton’s miserable run at the SCG continued in the Marn Grook match, as they came from behind to triumph in wet and slippery conditions.
Isaac Heeney (pictured below) was the catalyst for the Swans, picking up the first Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal of his career, with a best on ground that included a career-high 38 disposals.
The only disappointment was that they will lose Joel Amartey for three games after he was suspended for electing to bump and concuss Jordan Boyd.
For the Blues, it is now the fifth time, in their six defeats so far, where they have led at three-quarter time only to then fade out, which is a real worry and cause for concern.
Kangas ends MCG hoodoo
Two sides struggling at the wrong end of the ladder clashed, with North Melbourne coming out on top to defeat Richmond by a four-point margin in a real arm wrestle.
It was the Kangas’ first victory at the MCG since 2017 and only their second of the season. The contest was tight and had the most stoppages (137) of any match this year.
Despite suffering a burst artery in his foot and a bout of illness during the week, Cameron Zurhaar (pictured above) still managed to get up and kick a season-high four snags.
The Tigers went all out in the final stages, pushing men forward, but Kane McAuliffe and Tim Taranto could only score behinds as they fell short.
Vale Adam Selwood
Waalitj Marawar (West Coast) picked up their first success of 2025 with a victory over Euro-Yroke (St Kilda) on an emotionally charged afternoon at Optus Stadium.
This fixture comes just a day after the tragic loss of Adam Selwood, a Premiership player for the Eagles who made 187 appearances between 2003 and 2013.
He was a Life Member and recipient of the Best Clubman award in 2013. Following his retirement, he remained at the club as a development coach. He became the inaugural Head of Female Football and held administrative roles.
The 42,000+ crowd observed an impeccable minute’s silence before the bounce, and a video played in his honour on the big screens at half-time.
